Endless carving.

I've come to the point in this project where everything there is to do, is an endless amount of carving. So it's just a matter of picking up that knife and start chopping away at the styrofoam.

Still, i quite enjoy it! Because now i'm finally starting to see the finished product infront of me. When that blade starts flowing through the styrofoam i get to imagine how the end result will be, and that's pretty sweet.


Here you can see some of the work taking place, there's at this point still about 40 pieces left to detail carve. Also a friend of mine in our gaming group has offered to help me with the project to speed things up.

Hotwire tools and fumes.

Kids. Remember, fumes from melting styrofoam is not just a great rush, it's also hazardous! So don't play around in it for too long!

Anywho, the progress is in full speed and so far it is all down to loads and loads of hotwire cutting. I imagine this to be one of the most boring but still crusial parts of the project. It's time consuming and repedative but isnt that what large scale projects is all about in the beginning. Working youor ass off to get to the more interesting parts of the project like details and coloring.

I'm basing my modular pieces on a thin board which i picked up at a local DIY store. A more international name for it would be Masonite i guess, very easy to work with and lightweight.

Woah, didn't see that one, but there's some free advertisement for my gaming group in that picture!

Right, the Masonite (board) squares are 8"x8" and gives a steady and lightweight surface to build on, aswell as making every piece stackable which i thought would be key when storing this table.

The styrofoam is cut in 2.4" strips, which are then glued in place with regular white glue. The reason for 2.4 is that i'm building using centimeters instead of inches, because it's more natural to me after all. :)

Here you can see the mine starting to take shape!

Tomorrow i will continue with carving of each individual piece aswell as staring the work on sealing it with filler or plaster or what ever you want to call it. It's used to cover up holes in walls among other things.

So it begins!

This will be my first post of many about a project of epic proportions!
So far i've been working on it for a few days and i'm far from done.

The project i'm speaking of is a Modular Minesystem as a Mordheim setting, inspired by cianty and his impressive mine for BtB. For those who haven't seen it, check it out at this site.

To understand how massive this project will be i want you to imagine a full 4'x6' table covered in square 8" blocks. We are talking about 54 pieces per table, with a total of around 70 pieces to get some variation on the layout.

To summerize, the setting will include up to 70 highly detailed pieces of modular terrain, aswell as a new chart for Random Happenings with every possible entry modelled. There will also be a Darkness rule which pretty much means you have to carry a light source or you'll just see 6" ahead of you.

It all has to start with something, in this case we have lots of styrofoam. Both the regular white stuff and tons of pinkfoam.
